About half of Black homebuyers get loans backed by the mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which primarily use a borrower's credit score and down payment to measure the risk that will determine the cost of the loan. Because the average Black borrower's credit score is about 60 points lower than the average white borrower's score, and because Black buyers, on average, make smaller down payments, risk-based pricing tends to drive up costs for the average Black homebuyer. The people who were disproportionately targeted belonged to the same communities that had been redlined, locked out of neighborhoods because of racially restrictive covenants, and blockbusted. Now, predatory loans would take away the wealth that so many had spent their lifetimes building. Learn how Twin Cities Habitat is responding to the challenge of closing the gap. Looking at trends in homebuying among Black and non-Black homebuyers can give us an indication of whether homeownership rates among Black Americans may be improving.

Similarly, for metropolitan Minneapolis, the gap between the Black and White home ownership rates was 51 percentage points, the largest gap for any metro area in the U.S. with more than 1 million residents. Mary Kay Huss, Richmond Metropolitan Habitat chief executive officer, talks about historic housing discrimination and what Habitat is doing to help advance Black homeownership locally. It ensures teachers can live where they teach, firefighters can live where they serve, and business owners can set up shop locally. When our neighbors have affordable housing, they can in turn fuel economic growth through spending more on goods and services. A Black homeowner advisory group, representative of the people we seek to serve, to help guide us as we develop strategies and implement programs to increase Black homeownership across the U.S. Habitat for Humanity’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live, but a structure of intentional and systemic racial discrimination in the U.S. has created barriers to homeownership for many Black families.

Robert Johnson was just one of thousands of Black Comptonites who began streaming out of the city in the 1980s in search of more space and safer neighborhoods. The face of the once majority Black city was changing quickly as its African American residents largely moved inland to newly built exurbs. Johnson remembers some neighbors began having trouble making their mortgage payments. "The first time I really noticed it personally was at school because you're sitting in class and your classmates are gone," he says. "I see moving vans, trucks and everything all down the street," he says. Johnson was 5 years old at the time, so he says he thought "it was moving day for everybody." And he noticed that all the other families moving in were were Black, too.

Fortunately, Rice says, her parents were able to get a fixed mortgage rate and eventually pay off their loan. The agent took Rice's parents to a neighborhood in Toledo called Parkside Extensions because that was an area where the agent said more Black families were moving. At the time, Rice says her family was the only Black family on the block. But five years later, the neighborhood had transitioned to one that was predominantly Black. "My mom wanted to buy a home in a predominantly White suburb called Sylvania, Ohio," Rice says.

The tree-lined boulevards of the West Adams neighborhood are studded with stately homes. "The market is a reflection of that which we hold to be valuable — that which we see as desirable, that which we see as undesirable. And it's impossible to measure that without factoring in race in the United States," says writer Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor. Government data from over 70 sources organized to show how the money flows, the impact, and who "the people" are.

The very next morning — she made an appointment with Mark Alston, a local mortgage broker well known in the South LA Black community, to inquire about purchasing her very own home for the first time. We need to know what caused the paradox before we’ll know how to fix our home ownership problem. Clearly, after five decades of failure, any housing market misconceptions we have are so entrenched they’re invisible to us.

Eintracht lost 7–3 to Real Madrid in a final that was widely regarded as one of the best football matches ever played, which included a hat-trick by Alfredo Di Stéfano and four goals by Ferenc Puskás. For the first of the two matches, FSV's home game on 21 August 2011, the decision was made to move to Eintracht's stadium as FSV's Bornheimer Hang only holds less than 11,000 spectators. The second match on 18 February 2012 ended in another victory for Eintracht, a 6–1 rout. In 1984, they defeated MSV Duisburg 6–1 on aggregate, and in 1989 they beat 1.
